Description

Description:
One of the most important developments in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) over the past decade is the adaptation of DBT for adolescents with multiple problems who are at high risk for suicidal and self-injurious behavior. DBT for adolescents was developed by Drs. Alec Miller, Jill Rathus, and Marsha Linehan to address the complex and unique challenges that arise during treatment with these adolescents and their families. Highland Meadows Counseling Center is excited to have Dr. Alec L. Miller, PsyD, co-founder and clinical director of Cognitive & Behavioral Consultants (CBC) in New York and internationally noted expert in DBT for adolescents and families, present this two day advanced training to enhance your work with adolescent clients and their families.

Since 1995, Dr. Miller has conducted clinical research and published extensively on DBT, including three books: DBT with Suicidal Adolescents, DBT Skills Manual for Adolescents and DBT Skills in Schools (DBT STEPS-A). He was also a lead trainer and co-investigator of the first randomized controlled trial of DBT with suicidal adolescents, published in 2014.

In this training participants will learn about DBT skills training with adolescents and their families. Dr. Miller will provide an overview of the research and development of the adaptations made to standard DBT to address the needs of adolescents and their families, discuss the implementation of these adaptations including a particular focus on multi- family skills training classes and the latest DBT skills for adolescents and their caregivers. Strategies for bringing DBT principles to skills training, engaging teens and caregivers, and group management will be provided. Ample demonstrations, experiential exercises, and role plays will help illustrate workshop content.
