Event description

Description

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment model for clients presenting with emotional and interpersonal dysregulation, as well as patterns of impulsive and destructive behaviors—all problems prevalent among many teens seeking behavioral health treatment. And these problems, when chronic and severe, can in-turn create added turmoil in often already tumultuous home environments. The dialectical nature of this treatment model—balancing structure and organization rooted in cognitive and behavioral treatment models, with the fluidity and flexibility of a mindfulness-based approach—lends itself well to the treatment of these complex problems. This training is designed to provide a theoretical orientation to DBT that will support a transactional conceptualization of these problems in-context, and a road map for clinicians as they attempt to help both teens and their families navigate complicated dilemmas in a skillful and effective manner. Specifically, this training will cover:

  • Theoretical basis for DBT, including a transactional conceptualization of common teen/family problems

  • Synopsis of Comprehensive DBT and modifications to standard DBT for treating teens and families

  • Effective therapist strategies to enhance motivation and commitment with teens, and conducting chain analyses with families

  • DBT skills, emphasizing those from Linehan’s second edition Skill Manual (2014), and Allan Fruzzetti’s Family Skills Manual

Presented by Kathryn Patrick:

Kathryn Patrick, LCSW has extensive and expert training in DBT, with 10 years in the field. She has had direct clinical supervision from DBT expert, Dr. Linda Dimeff, and has been a DBT trainer, consultant, and supervisor for over 5 years. In addition to her private clinical practice in Denver, CO, Kathryn currently serves as a clinical supervisor for graduate students at treatment developer Dr. Marsha Linehan’s lab at the University of Washington, assists DBT expert Dr. Kelly Koerner with online training/education of evidence-based practices through the Evidence-Based Practice Institute, and is an adjunct instructor at the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work.
