Day of Fun
Sat, April 22, 2017, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM EDT
Hi everyone! My name is Caila French and I am a Senior at the Brooklyn Friends School (BFS). Each student must complete a Program called CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service) during their time at BFS, which culminates in a community-based Project. For my CAS Project I have decided to put together a Day of Fun, a three-tiered initiative to benefit my community in various ways. My Day of Fun is built to raise money, get kids active and begin to form bonds between private and public school students. The money raised by this event will go towards Project F.O.C.U.S. and The Horizons Program at Brooklyn Friends. Project F.O.C.U.S is a student ran organization that was started by current juniors at Poly Prep Country Day school. F.O.C.U.S provides public school students with lessons that extend beyond their everyday curriculum and create lessons that are built to represent our students. At F.O.C.U.S we strive to expand social and academic knowledge to create powerful voices inside and outside of the classroom. Similarly, The Horizons Program at Brooklyn Friends is an after-school and summer program that works towards closing the summer learning gap. In the efforts of creating a more equal educational playing field, Horizons provides one on one student to teacher relationships and a positive environment to learn and create in.
My Day of Fun will provide an interactive, fun and educational space for lower and middle school students on Saturday, April 22. During the first full month of spring is the perfect time to get out of the house on the weekend and engage with your community in ways that may be different than what you're used to. The Day of Fun will feature workshops that span from juggling to dancing to creating visual art, all centered on ways we as young people can act as change makers. Lastly, and most importantly the Day of Fun seeks to create new friendships that extend beyond the small social bubbles of each school invited. This day is a way to bridge the gap between multiple environments that are viewed by some as different worlds and bond on the strict basis and common denominator, being kids! The invited students will be coming from Project FOCUS, Horizons and The Brooklyn Consortium Schools. For The Brooklyn Consortium Schools, the tickets will cost 15 dollars and all funds will go directly to benefit our friends at Project F.O.C.U.S and Horizons! For F.O.C.U.S and Horizons students, the tickets will be free!
