  • 1-2 PM: Merengue and Bachata Workshop - Renate Dugans & Steve Reed (SALSAtlanta)

Learn how to dance two of the most popular Latin street dances worldwide…Merengue and Bachata! This 1-hour workshop will cover the basic footwork of Merengue and Bachata and some fun turns to spice things up. After capturing the basics to these fun and energetic dances, you’ll be ready to dance at any Latin dance party! Steve and Renate have been active as Group Fitness (GF) Instructors for over 10 years. They have distinguished backgrounds not only as GF instructors but also in athletics and are instructors and performers with SALSAtlanta.

  • 2-3 PM: Basic/Beginner Salsa Steps + Casino Rueda Workshop - Gwyneth Moody (SALSAthens)

Get ready to learn the basic steps of salsa dancing and the special Cuban dance formation of Rueda de Casino (in Spanish the word Rueda=Wheel). This dance originated and evolved during the late 1940's and the 1950's in Havana Cuba, and later, Miami, when Cuban emigrants who brought their music and customs to the United States-- into breathtaking combinations of spins and footwork. One couple may dance the steps alone, but the dance is best viewed with several couples dancing in a circle. Beginners are welcome in this fun and easy 1-hour workshop and no partner is necessary. This is great for those who claim to have "2 left feet" and also for those who would like a review of basic salsa steps. Gwyneth leads the SALSAthens dance group in Athens, Georgia.

  • 3-4 PM: Casino Rueda: Style Tune-Up Workshop - Julian Mejia (SALSAtlanta)

Need a Casino/Rueda style tune-up? Here's your chance to make your Rueda/Casino movements sexy and stylish.  Julián Mejía studied Casino-style Salsa in Miami, where Casino Salsa is king. He began teaching Casino-style Salsa when he moved to Atlanta in July of 1999; SALSAthens and SALSAtlanta grew out of these classes.  In 2007 he was recognized during the 6th Annual International Salsa Congress in Miami by the school Salsa Lovers with the "Alex Award" for his contribution to the world of Latin Dance. SALSAthens and SALSAtlanta are groups dedicated to dancing a particular style of Salsa known as Rueda de Casino (see description above).

  • 4-5 PM: Afro Cuban Dance Workshop - Michelito Herrera

This 1 hour Afro-Cuban dance workshop will focus on the folkloric dance style of Orishas, Palo,& Abakua dance, covering technique, songs and cultural context. This will be a fun energetic workshop delving into a richly colorful side of Latin dance. Beginners are welcome and no partner is necessary. Miguel "Michelito" Herrera is the former Musical Director of the world-acclaimed Cuban folkloric dance group Yoruba Andabo. A self-taught dancer and musician, Miguel has been deeply immersed in Cuban folkloric dance and performance since he was six years old, performing in child dance ensembles. A native of La Havana, Cuba, he has shared the world stage with some of Cuba's and Latin America's most prominent musicians and artists, including Chucho Valdes, Juan Formell & Los Van Van, Oscar de Leon, Xiomara Laugart from Yerba Buena, Calle 13 and Juanes in stages all over the globe.

 

  • 5-6 PM: - Julian Mejia (SALSAtlanta) Intermediate Rueda Casino *Open to participants with above entry level Rueda skills
