Description
Day in Durham is an opportunity for you, our First Years, to understand Durham’s past, present and future through a series of keynotes, panels, and activities led by Durham-based businesses, nonprofit organizations and government entities which are all creating a positive impact in our community. We’ll kickoff the day with lunch at Fuqua to learn about Durham’s exciting history as a former center for the tobacco industry, the home of Black Wall Street, and the revitalization that makes Raleigh-Durham one of the fastest growing metro-areas in the country. Then you’ll split into six tracks for a “field trip” to see and learn about the incredible social impact businesses, organizations and nonprofits making a difference in our community. Finally, we’ll meet back up at Fullsteam Brewery to unwind with Happy Hour!

How can the public and private sector collaborate to make cities more sustainable? From transportation to waste management, opportunities abound to provide sustainable options to the public. Representatives from local government and business will describe their efforts to help make Durham a more sustainable city.
Sustainable Food Systems
Featuring Mati Energy, The Durham Co-op, Firsthand Foods, Happy + Hale, and Counter Culture Coffee
How does having sustainable food sources positively impact communities? Who are the various players, organizations and companies leading the conversation on bringing us more organic, safe, and healthy food—that’s good for us and the environment? Learn from Durham’s sustainable food leaders working to improve all areas of the food system, from sourcing to retail and in-between.
Social Entrepreneurship
Featuring TROSA, The Redwoods Group Foundation, Art of Cool Project, and Helius Foundation
Solutions to social issues can take many forms, with both non- and for-profits making large strides in a variety of sectors. In this track, we’ll visit TROSA's headquarters and recovery house, and learn the unique challenges and rewards of starting a socially-conscious enterprise from some of Durham’s best social entrepreneurs. Learn how these leaders are approaching their issue areas and how Durham influences their strategies.
Impact Investing
Featuring Self-Help and SoarTriangle
Achieving both financial return and positive social impact sounds like a dream, but how does it really work? What kind of strategies and metrics do investors develop to evaluate opportunities? Join this track for a walking tour of organizations supported by investment firms in Durham, then get all your questions answered by professionals who will share their passion and real picture of impact investing.
Tech For Good
Featuring CloudFactory, Smashing Boxes, Trinket, and Medlio
Durham was recently deemed one of the tech hubs of the U.S.—So what kind of innovative technologies have been born and developed in Durham? How do they change our lives, community, and the world? We will have leaders from tech companies for the panel to discuss the latest movement in technology areas and its impact on society. Find out what Durham organizations are doing with technology to bring positive change to their communities, and try out some tech for yourself!
