"I strongly advise you to devote your hours of leisure to a concentrated study of the Teachings, that you may thereby acquire a firm foundation on which to build the structure of your future services to our beloved Cause."

(Shoghi Effendi, 25 Nov. 1927)

"Of special importance is the Book of the Iqán which explains the attitude of the Cause towards the prophets of God and their mission in the history of society. Besides this, there is “Some Answered Questions” of the Master and “Dawn-Breakers” of Nabíl. Every Bahá'í should master these [ prerequisites ] books and be able to explain their contents to others. "

(Shoghi Effendi, Feb 9 1932)

"Read books such as the Íqán, Some Answered Questions, Nabil's Narrative, and you will appreciate the truth of His mission, as well as the true spirit He creates in whosoever follows His ways."

(The Universal House of Justice, 1999, Scholarship )

Guided by an experienced and enthusiastic teacher, students read aloud together book after book of seminal Baha’i literature. With ten hours of reading each day, it only takes a few days to see a dramatic leap in reading comprehension levels. By the end of only two weeks, they have often read more Baha’i literature than in their entire Baha’i life up to this point. Although covering a lot of material, they do not skim but rather carefully analyse every sentence and summarize every paragraph. This develops the habit of study within the context of extensive reading.

In order to facilitate such intensity, stumbling blocks are identified in advance and tackled directly through pronunciation help, maps, memorization of key facts, persons and terminology etc. Thus a growing scaffold of knowledge assists reading comprehension rather than obstructing. Moreover, the discussion is not eliminated but rather streamlined by pre-identification of key concepts, paragraphs and passages. Key concepts are drawn out and discussed after reading the paragraph. Following discussion the paragraph is re-read for further reinforcement. Especially striking passages are assigned to the memorization schedule as a further exercise in expanding the mental capacity of the students as well as giving them morsels of thought to carry home.

Educational technologies are in a primitive state of development -- so it is likely that we have very little idea of how much a fully developed mind is capable of learning. The danger is that we obstruct the student’s potential by aiming too low -- perhaps by inadvertently taking ourselves as models. Instead, we have to assume that the minimum goal is that standard referred to as “rock bottom requirements” or “fundamental prerequisites” -- a standard laid down clearly by the House of Justice in their compilation on the importance of deepening.
