Obama's Second Term and New Uses of American Power

In his book Confront and Conceal, David Sanger illuminated the surprising new forms through which President Obama has exercised American power in his first term: the Stuxworm cyber campaign against Iran, the use of drone strikes against Pakistan, and the Navy SEAL raid on Bin Laden, among others.

Join us for a candid discussion of the challenges facing Obama's national security team in his second term and the surprising new forms of American power he may use to confront them. Mr. Sanger will focus on the Middle East: the evolving response to the Arab Spring, the dynamics of US-Iran confrontation, and whether the Administration will address Syria's deepening conflict.

David E. Sanger is chief Washington correspondent of The New York Times. A 1982 graduate of Harvard College, Mr. Sanger has reported for 30 years on a wide variety of issues surrounding foreign policy, globalization, nuclear proliferation and Asian affairs.

He has twice been part of New York Times reporting teams that have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize. In 2011, Mr. Sanger was also part of a team that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for International Reporting for their coverage of the tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan.

He is the author of two books: Confront and Conceal: Obama's Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power (Crown, June 2012) and The Inheritance: The World Obama Confronts and the Challenges to American Power (Harmony, 2009), both of which were best-sellers.
