1950 – directed by Irving Pichel – with Mickey Rooney, Peter Lorre and Jeanne Cagney
QUICKSAND is a snappy little film noir starring Mickey Rooney (only four years removed from his Andy Hardy heyday) as a poor schnook who longs for a date with James Cagney's creepy sister Jeanne. Broke as dirt, the ever-resourceful Mickey borrows 20 bucks from his boss' cash register and his life promptly spirals out of control with comically tragic results. Toss a lascivious Peter Lorre into the mix and you get a terrific noir that stands up with the best of them. Shot on location on the old Santa Monica Pier with swing era bandleader Red Nichols and his Five Pennies along for the sadistic merriment.
PLUS!--Buster Keaton in his amazing solo debut THE HIGH SIGN (1921), along with 16mm oddities from the Spazz Archives to round out the program. And you don't have to break the boss' cash register to get in--just five bucks gets you all of this top-notch entertainment!
