Description

Dave Glasser Summer Workshop Series

Pt. 4 "What Is Jazz?"

A Discussion - What is jazz to you? What are its origins? Socio-economic factors? How has modern academic institutionalization affected the music? How has fusion and international influences affected the music? When does jazz cease to be jazz and why? Where are we now, what does the future hold? Bring your definition and lets talk about the vast spectrum of perception enveloped in the word "jazz."

Dave Glasser, raised in NYC, holds a BM (84) and MM (86) from Eastman School of Music. He has been a faculty member at the New School University jazz program for over 20 years where he teaches Bebop Harmony, Senior Seminar, Explorations in Swing, Charlie Parker Ensemble, and private instruction on all instruments and vocalists. At New School he adjudicates all instrumental auditions and manages the 30-35 improvisation ensembles. Prior to his educational pursuits, his extensive performance experience includes 11 years touring and recording with Clark Terry's quintet and several years touring and recording with the Count Basie Orchestra. Additionally, he operates a private instruction studio and continues to perform as a soloist. As an educator and performer, he is a disciple of Barry Harris and Lee Konitz.
