Martin Sarasqueta is the Make studio coordinator at JUMP and has been, among other things, a pizza maker in Stanley, a bartender and sandal maker in the Caribbean, a custom furniture designer and builder in California, and a soap maker in Boise. When not tinkering with tools, he makes music no one wants to hear, grows too much food in his garden, makes really delicious gin, thinks way too much about soil, tries not to die skateboarding, and walks around collecting and scattering wildflower seeds on walks in the evening with his wife and dog.

What inspires you?

"Creativity, on any level, and unique innovation and problem solving inspire me. Give 100 people a task and ten tools, and you'll get eight different unique processes. I love picking apart the process and understanding why and how people do what they do. Craftsmanship is inspiring. People devoting their lives to perfecting a craft or trade. The world is full of beautiful, amazing things, from a perfect weld to a carefully curated bonsai tree to homemade croquetas. I love croquetas, mmmmm."

Kate Riley was pretty much done for after seeing her first pyramid of multi-colored macarons in France with her “granny.” After graduating from Western Culinary Institute as a pastry chef, she worked up and down the West coast and in Europe, discovering more curiosities from the kitchen and learning just how important a culture of food and eating are when it comes to connecting people. Mindful eating with family and friends, seasonal ingredients and of course the science of the kitchen are central for Kate. “I still sit in front of the oven to watch cakes bake—can’t think of a better meditation, really. There’s a whole world of reactions and responses happening in there!”

What are inspires you?

“People, travel and food. Especially when mixed together. Whether I’m exploring the south of France or eating chips in England, dining with friends in Boise or battling birds for apricots from the tree at my favorite trailhead (true story—it was formidable), I love learning about what makes food so special and how it connects us to ourselves, our ancestry and others. Good food has the ability to expand and heal all of our senses and it lends itself to storytelling in a way that goes so far beyond words. Sharing these experiences with each other is the icing on the cake.”
