This 2-day educational event is designed to increase awareness and skills in data visualization for the healthcare professional.

Day 1 – Communicating Healthcare Data with Tables and Graphs

Effectively communicating your data visually using tables and graphs is a skill, both technical and creative, to be learned and developed, like any other. Too often, the tables and graphs used to communicate health and healthcare data are poorly designed, at best failing to and at worst even incorrectly communicating the critical information used to measure performance, educate and inform patients, and identify the right opportunities for change and improvement to our health and healthcare systems.

Day 2 – Dashboard Design for Communicating Healthcare Data

Properly designed, data dashboards have enormous potential to help health and healthcare professionals visually identify and monitor at a glance the most important information needed to think, reason and make informed healthcare decisions. Day 1 is a prerequisite for our Day 2 Dashboard Design Workshop.

Here’s what you will learn on day one:

  • Historical overview of the development of administrative v. clinical databases and the importance of understanding the intent and purpose of these datasets
  • Techniques to design the right visualization for the right audience
  • Historical contributions to the visual communication of healthcare data and information
  • The difference between quantitative and categorical data
  • The definition of tables, and the arrangement and encoding of table data
  • When to use tables to communicate data
  • The characteristics of data that may be displayed graphically
  • When to use graphs to communicate data
  • Common mistakes in table and graph design, and how to avoid them

  • The seven most commonly used graphs to communicate data
  • How to use color, shape and size to create geospatial displays
  • Best practices of table and graph design

Here’s what you will learn on day two:

  • A brief history and definition of data dashboards
  • The current state of dashboards—problems revealed and opportunities identified
  • The most common dashboard design mistakes

  • How to use human visual perceptions to design effective dashboards
  • The guiding principles of dashboard design

  • Understanding the three basic types of dashboards
  • How to differentiate between a dashboard and a report
  • Different graphs and visualizations that are especially useful in dashboards
  • The features of a well-designed dashboard

  • How to determine the best medium to display your healthcare data
  • How to organize your dashboard to impart information at a glance

  • How to connect risk-adjusted healthcare data to the underlying statistics in a dashboard
  • How to make your dashboard aesthetically pleasing
  • How to test your design for usability
