Event description

Description

Speaker: Christopher H. Morrell, Director of Data Science Programs, Mathematics & Statistics Department, Loyola University Maryland

Abstract: What is the discipline of Data Science? What are its goals? What is the current demand for people with training in this area? This talk will share tools commonly used to analyze data, including statistical methods and machine learning techniques, and clarify the differences between supervised and unsupervised learning. We'll also discuss components of education backgrounds that support careers in Data Science. Only a knowledge of basic descriptive statistics will be assumed.

No Remote Access will be available for this event. We plan, however, to make a videotape and post a link to it on http://washstat.org/presentations/ and in the MAA video library. If you have the equipment and expertise and are willing to videotape the seminar, please let Carol Joyce Blumberg (cblumberg@gmail.com) know. We will also post at the above link a copy of the slides & handouts within a few weeks after the talk.

Sponsored by: WSS (Washington Statistical Society) Statistics Education Committee, MD-DC-VA Section of the MAA (Mathematics Association of America) and MAA National Office
