Event description

Description

SF Data presents a tech talk by the world's top 3 online learning platforms. Learn from the data engineering teams at:

  • Udemy
  • Udacity
  • Coursera

how they're building data platforms that:

  • process billions of events every day
  • predict and model student behavior
  • provide course recommendations to students on the fly
  • drive-up student engagement and course adoption

by using technologies such as Kafka, Spark, Amazon Redshift and AutoML.

THE TALKS

Udemy: Enriching a learner's discovery journey through real-time recommendations

Udemy is an online marketplace for improving lives through learning. At Udemy, we see a world where every learner can always find the right teacher. How do we ensure the learner discovers the most relevant teacher and course? The Udemy Data Platform Team will demystify how they capture user intent and accommodate course recommendations on the fly using Kafka, Spark Streaming and Cassandra.

Coursera: Building data infrastructure in Coursera

Coursera provides universal access to the world’s best education. The data infrastructure team at Coursera manages a variety of platform components (e.g. data warehouse, experimentation platform, analytics development environment, tracking, recommendation, emailing, data exports, etc.) In this talk, Zhaojun will cover how the data infrastructure team democratizes the data access in Coursera and how data infrastructure evolved from a small Python library to a suite of services and tools built on top of AWS Redshift, AWS ECS, docker in the last few years.

Udacity: Automated Machine Learning for Student Insights

Udacity offers 15+ nanodegree programs and 150+ courses. Student personas exhibit very different motivations and behaviors based on program and course type. Udacity data scientists spend a lot of time building models to predict student behavior. With recent advances in AutoML, Udacity has shifted to build these models automatically on a periodic schedule, persist the modeling results, generate related graphs and provide a UI where data scientists, program leads, and mentors can inspect the engagement of a program and of a specific student. This talk will give a whirlwind tour of the system, the challenges in building it and the future direction.

THE FAQs

Why do you do themed events?

It's our experience that the conversations in the room are way more engaged when everybody cares about the same topic and problems.

How technical are the talks?

Very technical. These are not marketing talks. If you care about hardcore data engineering, then our talks are probably for you.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The address is in SoMA. There's plenty of metered and unmetered parking nearby. Best to come by Uber or Lyft to not worry about it at all.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Send an email to lars@sfdata.io. Use "EdTech Event" for the subject line.

What's the refund policy?

ALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL. But you can transfer to a friend or colleague.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes.

Why do you charge for attending?

For three reasons: It creates a super-engaged audience (vs. free). It reduces no-show rates. And then it helps us cover some of the asscoiated costs like catering, video production and security.
