Event description

Description

DARK FUTURES is brought to you by Nikolas Badminton, Futurist, and the team that brought you the Cyborg Camp YVR, From Now: Humanity with Technology, and PRODUCT events. Society goes about their daily routine oblivious to the psychological, physiological, macroeconomic and technological forces at work. Are we sleepwalking? Can we wake up to what is happening and affect it? Do we even have a choice?

Many conferences talk about the incredible possibilities that are delivered by innovations, this conference speaks about the hidden systems that affect our daily lives (whether we are aware of it or not).

Version 4.0 - down the rabbit hole we go...

Speakers

Niko Bell, Freelance Journalist and Translator - Epigenetics

Epigenetics research is leading us to a place where it could be disturbingly easy to predict things about people's gender and sexuality in advance, and pull in-utero epigenetic levers that could form our children's gender and sexuality before they're born. But, should we?

Liz Mars, Hacker, Philosopher and Science Fiction Writer - Dragons and Fireflies

It's common knowledge that differences in financial resources cause health and life expectations and outcomes to diverge. While always problematic, this tendency raises especially pressing questions as ingenuity pushes medical technology forward. Meanwhile, progressive ecological degradation (including climate change) and negative trends in everything from nutrition to work threaten to scale back what is available and probable for the impecunious. We may be on the cusp of an era of 'dragons' and 'fireflies' -- i.e., a sharp demographic distinction between those who live centuries, and those who live a few decades.

Andrew Howell, Technologist - LIFEAFTER

What does the future have in store for life’s greatest eventuality? Opening with an assessment of society’s current attitudes towards death, and continuing with an exploration into possible opportunities for life after life, let’s explore what’s on the horizon for physical and mental death.

Bernd Petak, Technologist and Speaker - Crypto Utopia - Winners and losers in a blockchain-driven future

As with many interesting technologies before it, crypto and blockchain are finally receiving their time in the sun. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being poured into math and code, and incredible predictions for a utopian future are being made daily. In amongst the hype and promise lie a number of implications for this technology that indicate there will be losers as well as winners. For those losers, blockchain will come to represent unpleasant change at a minimum, and often loss of money, power and prestige to boot. To paraphrase a saying, if you don’t know who the loser is going to be, it’s probably you.

Christine Duhaime, Financial Crime and Anti-money Laundering Lawyer - subject restricted

The content is restricted to be shared at the event. No recording or sharing will be allowed in this part of the evening.

And, Nikolas Badminton, Futurist, will guide us through the evening with a few facts and stories that will really make you question your life online. Seriously, why do you spend so much time there?
