Dare2tri is looking for volunteers to help with its annual Paratriathlon Camp on June 9-11, 2017. The camp will be held at the RecPlex Sports Center in Pleasant Prairie, WI.

Event Description:

Dare2tri Paratriathlon Training Camp is open to athletes ages 16 and up of all experience levels. Athletes travel from across the country to participate in Dare2tri’s three-day camp at Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, which boasts top-level coaches, first-rate facilities, ample state of the art adaptive equipment for participants to use, highly trained and qualified staff and volunteers ready and willing to assist with anything an athlete might need.

Camp kicks off with two full days of clinics in swimming (pool and open water), cycling/handcycling, running/pushing, transition, nutrition, equipment maintenance and much more. On Sunday, athletes are invited to put their new skills to the test and cross the finish line at the Dare2tri Tri It Triathlon. All paratriathletes are welcome to participate, whether or not they attended the camp.


Volunteer Role Descriptions:

Equipment Unload/Setup Volunteer (Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday) - Volunteer will assist unloading adaptive equipment from trailers and help set up for the day including tents, water coolers, etc.

Registration Table Volunteer (Friday and/or Sunday) - Help staff check in athletes and volunteers. Hand out and explain schedules, waivers, t-shirts, etc.

Equipment Fitting Volunteer (Friday) - Athletes will need to be fitted for equipment they are borrowing for the weekend. The fitting session will take place before the camp begins on Friday from 7:30-9am. Volunteers may help athletes transfer in and out of equipment including lifting of athletes. Should have knowledge of minor equipment adjustments (how to use an allen wrench) etc. May need to make minor adjustments such as seat hieght on upright bikes, foot rests on handcycle and racing chairs, etc. Tutorial videos for some of these adjustments can be found on our website at: http://www.dare2tri.org/volunteers/

One-on-One Volunteer for Athlete (Friday and/or Saturday) - Volunteer will be assigned to a specific athlete and help them throughout the day at each session. Volunteer will be assigned to a specific athlete and help them throughout the day at each session. Volunteer will be working alongside the athlete throughout the day making sure they are comfortable and safe. Depending on the athlete's disabiity and the equipment they are using, the volunteer may be riding their own personal bike alongside the athlete during the bike/run portion. We may have athlete's who are blind or visually impaired and require a guide who can swim tethered together, comfortably ride a tandem bike, and run using a tether. Let us know if you are comfortable and experienced guiding an athlete with a visual impairment. Please bring your swim, bike and run gear. We will have a limited number of upright bikes available, so we suggest bringing your own bike if available.Volunteer will be working alongside the athlete throughout the day making sure they are comfortable and safe. Pool Swim Volunteer (Friday) - Assist lead coach at swim sessions at the indoor pool. Help athletes transfer in and out of the pool, as well as assist in water. Please bring swim wear and towel.

Open Water Swim Volunteer - Assist lead coach at open water swim session which will take place in the lake next to the Rec Plex facility. Help athletes transfer in and out of water, as well as assist in water. Please bring swim wear, goggles and towel. Volunteer should be comfortable swimming in open water.

Bike Volunteer - Assist lead coach during bike or racing chair push sessions. Help athletes transfer in and out of bike or racing chair equipment. May help guide athletes around the complex as they ride their bike/handcycle or push in their racing chair. Please bring your bike.

Run Volunteer - Assist the lead coach during ambulatory run sessions. Volunteers will be working with ambulatory athletes who can walk/run without the use of a racing wheelchair. Athletes will be participating in running drills, tempo runs, etc. Please wear comfortable running gear.

Functional Strength Volunteer - Assist lead instructor with functional strenghth session by giving cues, directions, and adaptations etc. to athletes.

Yoga Volunteer - Assist yoga instructor with cues, directions, adaptations, etc. for athletes. Should be familiar with yoga.

Open Water Swim Entry/Exit Handler (Saturday and/or Sunday) - Help lift athletes out of water and into their everyday wheelchair.

Water Safety Volunteer (Saturday and/or Sunday) - Volunteer needs to bring kayak or paddleboard. Will keep an eye on swimmers as they are swimming in open water. Swimmers may need to hold onto kayak or paddleboard for rest.

Lunch Set up Volunteer (Friday and/or Saturday) - Volunteer will assist staff with setting up and distributing lunches to athletes and volunteers.

Dinner Set up Volunteer (Saturday night) - Volunteer will assist staff with setting up and distributing dinner to athletes and volunteers.

Merchandise Sales Volunteer (Sunday) - Volunteer will assist staff with selling Dare2tri merchandise.

Personal Guide for Athlete during "Tri It Triathlon" Race (Sunday, approx 7am-10:00am) - Volunteer will be assigned to a specific athlete and help guide them throughout the race. If you volunteered on Friday and/or Saturday, you will paired with the athlete you have been working with. Must be comfortable swimming, biking and running. Volunteer will be alongside the athlete during the race making sure they are comfortable and safe. Depending on the athlete's disabiity and the equipment they are using, the volunteer may be riding their own personal bike alongside the athlete during the bike/run portion. We may have athlete's who are blind or visually impaired and require a guide who can swim tethered together, comfortably ride a tandem bike, and run using a tether. Transition Area Volunteer (Handler) during Sunday's Race (approx 7am-10:00am) - Volunteer will be assigned to a specific athlete and help them before, during and after the race. Volunteer will help athlete set up their transition area and equipment prior to the race. During the race, the volunteer will be in the transition area ready to assist the athlete during their transitions from swim to bike (T1) and bike to run (T2). Athletes may need help getting into their equipment during this time. After the race, volunteer will help athlete with their equipment if needed (i.e. bringing their everyday wheelchair to finish line, moving adaptive equipment, etc.) We generally assign two volunteers per athlete if the athlete requests a handler.

Race Course and Transition Area Setup/Clean up and General Help (Sunday, approx 6:00am-10:30am) - Volunteer will help set up race course with tasks including setting up directional signs, putting out parking cones, setting up transition area, etc. We will need your assistance after the race to take down all race materials and equipment. During the race, we can use your help as a bike/run course marshal or just cheering on all the athletes as they are competing!

Race Day Crew - Water Aid Stations (Sunday, approx 7am-10am) - Volunteer will be handing out water and cheering athletes at water aid stationed throughout the race course.

Race Day Crew - Run Course Marshals (Sunday, approx 7am-10am) - Volunteer will be stationed at various parts of the run course to help direct athletes.

Race Day Crew - Bike Course Marshal (Sunday, approx 7am-10am) - Volunteer will be riding on the bike course and monitoring safety of athletes. Volunteer will radio in any issues that need attention on the bike course. Volunteer will need to provide their own bike for this role.

BBQ Setup/Servers (Sunday, approx 10am-1:00pm) - Volunteer will assist setting up post-race BBQ for athletes and volunteers. Will also help serve food.

BBQ Grill Master (Sunday, approx 10am-1:00pm) - Volunteer will assist with the BBQ'ing of hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.


Volunteers will be notified prior to camp regarding general camp information, schedules, responsibilities, etc.

Please register for ALL days/times you are able to volunteer (Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday).
