Description

Please join us for the official film screening of the "Girls of Daraja" trilogy - hosted by the Daraja girls themselves!

Produced by Deborah Santana and Peabody and Emmy-winning filmmaker Barbara Rick, this short documentary series will introduce you to life at Daraja Academy, an academically acclaimed boarding school located in the beautiful Rift Valley outside Nanyuki, Kenya. The school is currently home to 116 exceptionally motivated Kenyan girls born into extreme poverty, who would otherwise be unable to attend secondary school and college. Now in its ninth year of operation, with five classes of successful secondary school graduates and one class of college graduates, Daraja has the potential to become a global incubator for the development and training of girls as leaders of global change.

Join us to watch one student’s journey as she leaves her family and home village to come to Daraja, and then watch another student's journey from the Daraja campus all the way to the Bay Area. Afterwards, find out what both these journeys feel like in real life by meeting current students Elizabeth and Mary. You’ll also hear from Charles Mbuto, Daraja’s Dean of Academics, and learn why he believes girls’ education is so critical to the development of Kenya, and the world.

The reception will begin at 6:30PM.
