Event description
A wonderful weekend in the woods with fellow string players and the DaPonte String Quartet, including masterclasses and coaching.

About this event

In the beautiful, secluded and relaxed lakeside setting of the historic Kieve/Wavus camps, the DaPonte String Quartet offers an all-scholarship, weekend-long workshop to aspiring high school string players from Maine. The weekend is dedicated to the study of chamber music, its preparation and performance, through the great works of the string quartet literature.

Twenty students, selected by audition, are organized into five string quartets. They are coached in the round by the individual members of the DaPonte String Quartet (violinists Lydia Forbes, Ferdinand Liva, violist Kirsten Monke and cellist Myles Jordan). The coaching sessions focus on the elements of ensemble playing: listening, communication, cueing, rhythm, intonation, blending, and theory and music history. At the completion of the workshop, a concert is presented by all the students for parents and friends.

The workshop is offered at no cost to the student. All lodging, food and tuition costs are covered.

For some, this workshop is a student’s first exposure to playing chamber music, and it is an experience that will stay with them for a lifetime.

About the Quartet

The DaPonte String Quartet have performed together since 1991. They have appeared in France, Scotland, Canada, and more than twenty American states. With Ferdinand Liva and Lydia Forbes on violin, Myles Jordan on cello, Kirsten Monke on viola, and guest artists ranging from Peter Serkin to Awadagin Pratt, they truly enrich Maine’s cultural life while also representing the state as they perform and teach around the country and the world. DSQ members are currently on the faculty of such places as the University of Southern Maine, Bowdoin College and Bay Chamber Music School.

What previous participants are saying:

“Having the opportunity to immerse myself in the music of Beethoven in such a beautiful setting, working and performing with like-minded people and being coached by the talented Daponte Quartet members was an experience that will not be soon forgotten.” --Callie, 16, Participant

“The workshop was intensive and rewarding. In a quartet there is no place to hide. Each musician brings a unique voice to the performance. It was a wonderful experience. The location was beautiful, the food was great, but the best part was the opportunity to learn from world-class performers.” --Shannon, 17, Participant

Eligibility: Students must demonstrate proficiency on their instruments, be able to read music easily, and be of high school age at the time of the workshop. Students must be available for the entire weekend.

Organizer DaPonte String Quartet

Organizer of DaPonte 2021 String Quartet Workshop for High School String Players

in 1991 in Philadelphia, four young musicians formed the DaPonte String Quartet, with the goal of playing the world’s greatest chamber music. Soon thereafter they surprised the musical world by leaving the big city and moving to mid-coast Maine on a 3-year National Endowment for the Arts/Chamber Music America rural residency grant. At the end of the residency, they found they’d fallen in love with Maine and, making a leap of faith, decided to stay.

The Quartet's repertoire spans the entire history of music, from 17th C works on original instruments to George Crumb’s string quartet for electric instruments, and the world-premiere of pieces written for them by such composers as Richard Danielpour and Pulitzer Prize winner David Del Tredici.
