Dancing in Unusual Times with Richard Powers
Eight easy dances in one hour! We can do that many because most are variations of three dances. Richard's reconstruction of the Zig Zag Saunter has become very popular in Russia, both in its solo and partnered versions. Then Richard will teach three "valses asymétriques" of today — waltzes in 5/4, 8/4, and 11/4 time. Then we'll finish with the Swing Era fad dance the Palais Glide, which was later revived with polka music as Hot Pretzels. All can be danced solo or with a partner. This workshop is pre-recorded and will be accompanied by a live appearance and discussion by Richard Powers throughout the hour. Zoom chat and mic will remain available to the audience. Prerequisite: Waltz dancing experience.
Instructor: Richard Powers is a full-time instructor in dance history and contemporary social dance forms at Stanford University Dance Division, Department of Theater and Performance Studies. Richard’s principal focus since 1975 has been social dance forms, from the Renaissance to today. Specializations include 19th century American and European social dance, dances of the Ragtime Era and Jazz Ages, and currently evolving vernacular dance forms. Richard is an engaging and fascinating purveyor of dance and its history, enabling a more complete comprehension of the dances we love.
