What is #Dance4OurLives?
#Dance4OurLives is a weekend-long event held just before Memorial Day Weekend to welcome and celebrate a safe summer in Chicago, where gun violence is a continued threat to various communities. This year, #Dance4OurLives will take place: SATURDAY, May 18th (DANCE RALLY DOWNTOWN@ 1PM-2PM), (DANCE WORKSHOP *DAY 1* @2PM-8:30PM) & SUNDAY, May 19th(DANCE WORKSHOP *DAY 2* @2PM-8PM). Click to see the workshop schedule here!
Memorial Day weekend is considered the unofficial beginning of summer but, tragically, it is also one of Chicago’s bloodiest weekends. Last year, 36 people were shot over the holiday (with 7 fatalities). In 2017, 44 people were injured and 6 were killed in Memorial Day shootings.
#Dance4OurLives was inspired, in part, by the historic March for Our Lives and uses dance to promote peace, nonviolence and unity throughout the city. The event is especially geared toward the South and West sides of Chicago, which are most heavily affected by gun violence.
What Will Be Happening At The Event?
The weekend of programming features dance rallies, master dance classes and workshops, as well as performances from local dance artists and organizations. It will provide insight on the various benefits of dance, as well as resources to utilize dance as a safe and fun outlet.
