About this Event

April Comes Pouring In! Along with Dance With Daniel.

Daniel teaches a weekly dance class on Zoom this April at a spring special rate. Each class is its own complete lesson. You are welcome to join at any point during the month.

This intermediate/advanced class is a great introduction to the style and repertory of Daniel’s choreography, which challenges the brain equal to the body with its unexpected weight shifts, changes of direction, and use of the full spectrum of speed. Intellectual explorations match physical ones, synthesizing complex coordination and rewiring the body to function outside that it already knows. Coordination, musicality, rhythmic acuteness, sharpness are enhanced. The class cultivates a natural way of moving along with a stylized one, privileging all movement equally, encouraging the dancer to dance with individuality, precision, clarity, and intention. Rigorous, energetic, and fun! Daniel's class blends modern dance, theater dance, and folk dance, cultivating the physicality and the expressivity of the artist, blending virtuosity with pedestrianism, casualness with precision.

Not sure if this class is right for you? Come and find out. All levels welcome to participate per comfort. Daniel individualizes choreography to match the skills of the dancers in the Zoom room with him. He requests your video will be on during the class.

In honor of Spring's arrival, the class savings are pouring in! Suggested Class Donation Starts at $9/class.

Daniel Gwirtzman celebrates twenty-six years as a New York choreographer and company director. His repertory has earned praise for its humor, stylistic diversity, musicality, charisma and accessibility. “Mr. Gwirtzman does know that in dance less can be more. And that’s a good thing for any choreographer to know” writes The New York Times. The New Yorker describes him as a choreographer of “high spirits and skill.”

The acclaimed New York-based nonprofit Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company is currently celebrating its 22nd Anniversary season. “A troupe I’d follow anywhere” (The Village Voice), a “troupe of fabulous dancers,” (Backstage) “the dancers can’t help but smile” (The New Yorker). Performance highlights include Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Edinburgh International Fringe Festival, Fire Island Dance Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Bryant Park, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The Company’s dance films have screened in national and international festivals including the American Dance Festival. DGDC has been awarded residencies by New York’s Joyce Theater, Raumars (Finland), Sacatar (Brazil), Djerassi (California), Skafiotes (Greece), Maison Dora Maar, (France), Centro Negra (Spain), Gdański Festiwal Tanca (Poland), and The Studios of Key West.

Since its inception the nonprofit has demonstrated a commitment to education through multigenerational interactive programming. Reviewing the 20th Anniversary Season in February, 2019 at Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y OnStageBlog’s critic writes: “Provocative, whimsical, and ethereal, the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company defies expectations of postmodern dance and soars, unafraid to take risks and dazzle with unflinching honesty.”

Daniel danced with the acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance and Mark Morris Dance Group, and has been on the faculty at SUNY Buffalo State, Kennesaw State University, and The University of the Arts as well as a guest artist at numerous schools, colleges, and universities. He is currently a professor of dance at Ithaca College's renown Department of Theatre Arts.
