Dance Durham Dance: Celebrating Durham 150!

150 Year Celebration of African American Dance in Durham

Hayti Heritage Center presents Dance Durham Dance – a re-creation of the live music and dance scene of the historic Hayti neighborhood.

This event celebrates the 150th anniversary of the City of Durham's incorporation. It will also kick off Hayti's connection to downtown Durham's monthly 3rd Friday art events. Dance Durham Dance takes place at Hayti on October 18th from 6 pm to midnight.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

OUTSIDE @ HAYTI

6pm-Midnight - AFROPOP! 2 DJ's + food trucks + vendors

INSIDE @ HAYTI

6pm - Dance, Durham, Dance Art Exhibition Opening Reception

7:30pm - Live Performance featuring live band, dancers and african drumming

Dance, Durham, Dance will activate Hayti's entire space in a block party-style atmosphere, with AfroPop Nation featuring, Soca, Afrobeat, live drumming & dancing, vendors, and food trucks on the outside. And on the inside, the event will showcase the history of Durham's Black arts scene through music and dance. Hayti’s community room and gallery will transport guests to a time that was transformational in Durham’s history thru an Art Exhibit & live performance. In Dance Durham Dance, live jazz and R&B music will provide a backdrop for the lindy hop, line dance, the twist and the slow drag -- some of the popular dances prominent in the Durham social scene between the ‘50s and ‘80s.

The Hayti Heritage Center was awarded a $2000 grant from the Durham 150 fund. In honor of Dance Durham Dance, the Center will launch a $5,000 campaign to raise matching monies for the Chuck Davis Endowment fund which is a part of Hayti's 2019 #GivingTuesday Campaign, to update Hayti's Chuck Davis Dance Emporium.

Hayti partners with AfroPop! Nation, who produces events highlighting black culture through music, fashion, and dope visual content; It's not a party, it's a lifestyle! Visit us at http://afropopnation.com for more information, and check out our IG page for cool visual at AfroPopNation.
