Description

Experience traditional drum and dance instruction from five countries; an African Market featuring unique handmade goods; artist Q&A and community. Dance Africa Fest invites participants of all ages and skill levels to connect with significant traditional dance forms originating from the continent. Acclaimed teaching artists this year are Mabiba Baegne, Kiazi Malonga, Solo Sana, Vieux Traore and Phumelele Ntokozo Bohlela/Popit.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

  • 9:00 am - 10:00 am, FREE Community and Kids dance class (Guinean dance; Djembe).

  • 9:00 am - 10:30 am, PopIt Afrobeats dance class (Nigerian and South African dance).

  • 10:15 am - 11:45 pm, Vieux Traore drum class (Malian dance; Djembe & DounDoun). Bring your own drum, limited rentals.

  • 10:45 am - 12:15 pm, Solo Sana dance class (Malian dance; Djembe).

  • 12:25 pm - 1:25 pm, Lunchtime Artist Q&A (lunch included in Full Bundle purchase).

  • 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm, Mabiba Baegne doundoun class (Guinean, doundoun dance is a combination of dance and stick drumming). Bring your doundoun, ashiko or other drum (not your djembe), limited rentals.

  • 3:15 pm - 4:45 pm, Solo Sana dance class (Malian; Djembe).

  • 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm, Mabiba Baegne dance class (Congolese; Ngoma).

** Workshops are free for children under 10 years old (must have parent or guardian on site).

FAQs

Workshop attire?

Workshops are presented indoors. Dances are taught barefoot, so there’s no need to worry about special shoes. Participants are encouraged to hydrate regularly. Wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict movement and allows a full range of motion (i.e. lappas, sweatpants, shorts or sarongs.)


Are there any accessibility features?

The venue is wheelchair accessible. Dance Africa Fest is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you require special assistance for participation in our programs please contact us at Tonya@DanceAfricaFest.org.


Is there a minimum age requirement to enter the event?

There is no age limit to enter the festival.


Is there a cost for youth/children?

Admission is free for children up to 10 years old (must have parent or guardian on site). Parents/caregivers are required to supervise their children during the workshops.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Arriving by Bus: MetroRapid 803 DOMAIN and MetroBus 338 drop off near the venue, with a five to ten minute walk to the building. Go to Trip Planner online for your route specifics at https://www.capmetro.org/planner, or call the GO Line - 512-474-1200.

Arriving by car from downtown Austin:

Take I-35 S
Then 3.15 miles
Merge onto US-290 W/TX-71 W via EXIT 230 toward Johnson City.
Then 2.90 miles
Take the exit toward TX-343/Lamar Blvd/West Gate Blvd.
Then 0.41 miles
Merge onto W Ben White Blvd.
Then 0.11 miles
W Ben White Blvd becomes TX-360/S Capital of Texas Hwy.
Then 0.03 miles
Turn left onto S Lamar Blvd.
Then 0.34 miles

4544 S Lamar Blvd, bldg 200, Austin, TX 78745-1500, 4544 S LAMAR BLVD, BLDG 200 is on the right. (Look for the Bravo Theater). There's free on-site parking in front of, and surrounding the building.


What can I bring into the event?

Bottled water in non-glass containers to keep you hydrated throughout the day.
