As we continue to move into the 21st century, the Internet is emerging as the new battlefield on the International stage.  As Internet connectivity becomes commoditized and the barrier to entry is further reduced, it becomes easier for potential adversaries of the United States to wield the power of the Internet to launch attacks against the US infrastructure and its National interests, disrupting the flow of information and leaving destruction in its wake.  It is becoming increasingly possible for our adversaries to not only cause extraordinary economic havoc, but also loss of life as critical services such as E911 and other emergency services become more dependent upon the Internet.  At the same time a perfect storm is brewing because the resources currently allocated to preparing ourselves for this advancing threat are stretched to the limit and largely focused on obsolete technologies that are considerably out of date.

A series of panelists will discuss this ever-increasing reality and the potential that wars in the future won't be fought so much on the traditional battlefield but rather electronically targeting critical components of a national infrastructure.  The panelists will discuss what has been done by the US Government to secure certain core components of our national infrastructure, what remains to be done, and will also serve as a "call to arms" to better secure our national cyber landscape.  The members of this panel have all been intimately involved within the Networking Security industry for many years and are engaged in the implementation of their solutions at the ground level.  Their insights will provide invaluable viewpoints regarding this very real and emerging threat and will provide invaluable experience to the attendees of the presentation.

Danny McPherson

Danny is currently leading VeriSign Labs' research in the area of network security and availability.  With nearly 20 years of experience in the Internet network operations, security and telecommunications industries, he brings tremendous technical leadership to the team in these areas.  Prior to joining VeriSign, Danny was Vice President and Chief Security Officer at Arbor Networks, and previously held technology, engineering and operations positions with Amber Networks, internetMCI, Genuity (acquired by GTE Internetworking), Qwest Communications and the U.S. Army Signal Corp.

Danny has been an active participant in Internet standardization since 1996. Currently he is a member of the Internet Architecture Board (IAB), the Internet Research Steering Group (IRSG) and co-chairs the IETF's L3VPN WG.

He also serves on the ICANN Security and Stability Advisory Council (SSAC) and is quite active in the network and security operations and research communities.

Danny has authored a significant number of books, Internet protocol standards, network and security research papers and other documents related to Internet architecture, routing protocols, network security, Internet addressing and network operations.


Dr. Jose Nazario, Senior Manager, Security Research, Arbor Networks

Dr. Jose Nazario is the senior manager of security research at Arbor Networks. In this capacity, he is responsible for analyzing burgeoning Internet security threats, reverse engineering malicious code, software development, developing security mechanisms that are then distributed to Arbor's Peakflow platforms via the Active Threat Feed (ATF) threat detection service.

Dr. Nazario's research interests include large-scale Internet trends such as reachability and topology measurement, Internet-scale events such as DDoS attacks, botnets and worms, source code analysis tools, and data mining. He is the author of the books "Defense and Detection Strategies against Internet Worms" and "Secure Architectures with OpenBSD." He earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 2002. Prior to joining Arbor Networks, he was an independent security consultant. Dr. Nazario regularly speaks at conferences worldwide, with past presentations at CanSecWest, PacSec, Blackhat, and NANOG. He also maintains, a site devoted to studying worm detection and defense research.

Nitin Mehrotra, Vice President of Engineering & Chief Technology Officer, RioRey, Inc.

Mr. Mehrotra is a technologist with over twenty years of software engineering and management experience and a track record of successfully delivered complex communication products to the market. Prior to RioReyT, he was the founder and CTO of Miricast, an IP TV company that developed a video-delivery platform. Mr. Mehrotra has held senior engineering management positions as Director of Software at Alidian Networks, a developer of layer two metro optical networking platforms, and before that, as Director of Software at Lucent Technologies' Data Networking Systems Division, where he lead the group in delivering the award-winning PSAX multi-service edge switch.

Mr. Mehrotra started his career at Unisys Corporation where he worked in the operating systems development group. Mr. Mehrotra holds a M.S from Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, India and has completed graduate level Computer Science courses at both UCLA and Stanford University. He is a longtime member of the IEEE society and an early contributor to the POSIX security working groups.

Richard Stiennon, Founder, IT-Harvest, and Author of "Surviving Cyberwar"

Richard Stiennon, security expert and industry analyst, is known for shaking up the industry and providing actionable guidance to vendors and end users.

He is the author of Surviving Cyberwar (Government Institutes, 2010) and writes for and the Forbes Firewall blog.  He is the founder of IT-Harvest, an independent analyst firm that researches the 1,200 IT security vendors. He was Chief Marketing Officer for Fortinet, Inc. the leading UTM vendor. Prior to that he was VP Threat Research at Webroot Software.

Before Webroot, Mr. Stiennon was VP Research at Gartner Inc. where he covered security topics including firewalls, intrusion detection, intrusion prevention, security consulting, and managed security services.. He is a holder of Gartner's Thought Leadership award and was named "One of the 50 most powerful people in Networking" by NetworkWorld Magazine.

Mr. Stiennon has presented in 26 countries on six continents.  He earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan. He holds two patents.

Stefan Fouant, Founder, ShortestPathFirst

Stefan Fouant is a results-oriented technical leader with a diverse networking background.  As an authority on network security architecture and design, Stefan has had proven success in spearheading various multimillion-dollar projects from inception to completion.  His background includes launching an industry-first DDoS Mitigation and Detection service at Verizon Business, as well as building customized solutions for various mission-critical networks.

Mr. Fouant currently runs a consulting organization responsible for building customized engineering solutions and providing consulting support for a number of clients in the areas of Network Architecture and Design, Data-Center Virtualization and Consolidation, Disaster Recovery Planning, DDoS Mitigation and Detection, and overall Information Security best practices.

As a critical thinker and adept negotiator, Mr. Fouant applies his extensive industry knowledge to standards bodies, vendor partnerships and unique revenue-enhancing marketing and sales opportunities. He holds several patents in the areas of Network Security, DDoS Detection and Mitigation, and holds numerous industry certifications including CISSP, JNCIE-M, and JNCIE-ER.

Capital Technology Management Hub

CTMH is a networking organization for technology management professionals in the Washington metropolitan area. Founded and run by alumni of the Technology Management Master program at George Mason University, CTMH provides a forum where professionals can effectively network, learn, recruit, and search for new career opportunities. Technology Management professionals can have a wide variety of roles but in essence they design, implement, support, or manage technology and are decision-makers or decision-influencers in their respective organizations.

CTMH vision is creating of a network of professional where technology management talent is discovered and developed and where good business ideas are encouraged and supported.

CTMH mission is to provide a forum for technology management professionals operating in the public and private sector to network, recruit, learn, and share information so to increase their knowledge on products, trends, challenges, and opportunities in the technology management field.
