About this event

In Cyberfeminism Index, hackers, scholars, artists, and activists of all regions, races and sexual orientations consider how humans might reconstruct themselves by way of technology. When learning about internet history, we are taught to focus on engineering, the military-industrial complex, and the grandfathers who created the architecture and protocol. However, the internet is not only a network of cables, servers, and computers. It is an environment that shapes and is shaped by its inhabitants and their use. Edited by graphic designer, curator and thinker Mindy Seu, Cyberfeminism Index gathers more than 700 short entries of radical techno-critical activism, feminist manifestos, hackerspaces, hardware and wetware education and net art from 1991 to 2020, starting with an excerpt from Donna Haraway’s seminal essay “A Cyborg Manifesto”. Its online complement, https://cyberfeminismindex.com/ (2020), is a living, online index that was commissioned by Rhizome and premiered with New Museum.

The 608 page book opens with a foreword by VNS Matrix—an artist collective established in the early 90s who set out“on a mission to hijack the toys from technocowboys andremap cyberculture with a feminist bent.” It ends with an afterword by Legacy Russell, author of Glitch Feminism.
