About this event
Create and develop your own cyanotype print from objects in the museum's collections, or bring your own
Cyanotype is an antique method of printing using a combination of two chemicals invented in 1842. Once combined, exposed to ultraviolet light, and rinsed the result is an incomparable rich blue color known as Prussian Blue. One common application is a photogram, which is placing objects directly onto a treated surface to create silhouettes of the objects. Cyanotype is also one of the safest and most archival of photographic methods, lending itself to long lasting images. Objects with unique outlines, funky shapes, and semitransparent elements make beautiful cyanotype prints, an ideal match for the Office of Collecting and Design's collection.
About Emily Relf: I am an art educator and artist who has a habit of becoming fixated on unique processes and techniques. I have lived around the world (Saudi Arabia, Thailand, France, Jamaica, Bangladesh, and Bahrain), unexpectedly finding myself in the culturally rich environment of Las Vegas. I develop strong bonds with antiquated methods but I focus my teaching and practice on contemporary art and artists. My work is mostly project based and site specific with photography being the only constant.
Currently, I enjoy teaching the young artists at Marion E. Cahlan Elementary School in North Las Vegas, and credit them with fueling my playful spirit.
