About this event

The CVF Secretariat is pleased to convey an update on the invitation for the CVF LAC Regional Dialogue to be held on 23th & 24th of June 2021. The first in a series of policy activities being convened by the forum in 2021 leading up to UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow, the CVF’s LAC Dialogue will be held in an online format co-hosted by Bangladesh, in its role as CVF Chair, together with Costa Rica, currently holding the SICA presidency.

Summary/Overview

The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Regional Dialogue aims to identify and promote headline climate change policy priorities for vulnerable developing countries of the region ahead of critical multilateral global policy events in 2021. The Dialogue provides an opportunity for CVF member and observer countries in the region to exchange on challenges, successes and experiences in climate change policy and develop collective policy priorities.

The first in a series of CVF Regional Dialogues being convened by the forum in 2021, the CVF LAC Regional Dialogue’s outcomes will feed into the global deliberations of the CVF ahead of and during UNFCCC COP26 and contribute to the development of global momentum for the shared agenda of climate threatened nations throughout 2021.

The CVF LAC Regional Dialogue will be held in an online/virtual format and includes a meeting of experts on June 23rd, 2021, preparatory to its ministerial segment on June 24th, 2021. A dedicated half-day training for the CVF’s regional members and observers, organized by UNITAR, will be held on the morning June 24th.

Outputs, Outcomes & Follow-Up

The CVF LAC Regional Dialogue will draw on country experience to identify an up-to-date understanding of the types of challenges, successes, needs, and gaps that the region’s most vulnerable developing nations face as they work to implement climate change policies and tackle the growing global challenge of the climate crisis amid the response and recovery to the COVID-19 pandemic. In doing so, the Dialogue will identify and promote more effective climate change responses relevant to the region, as well as recommendations for partners and the international community. The platform of the Regional Dialogue reaches beyond the region’s existing member countries by involving regional observer countries that are interested to learn more about the work of the forum or potentially to petition for forum membership in 2021.

Expected outcomes of the CVF LAC Regional Dialogue include:

• CVF regional member countries better informed on and inputting on the CVF’s program of activities, key presidency priorities, communications initiatives and forward plans.

• Key partners to the CVF engaged for enhanced alignment of support to CVF members pursuing different climate-related national actions (NDCs, long term strategies, national planning and implementation for adaptation, mitigation and loss and damage; financing; etc.).

• Shared agreement on future climate change policy priorities for the region, inclusive consultation and identification of key policy priorities for the CVF, including issuing of a CVF LAC Regional Communique to build momentum and awareness around the CVF’s agenda in the region and beyond, building to COP26

• UNITAR-led training/learning session on climate change diplomacy for CVF members and observers
