Description

As Americans, we believe in justice for all. Yet, every year an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10 older Americans, experience elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Older Americans lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation, funds that could be used to pay for basic needs such as hosuing, food, and medical care. These statistics are likely an underestimate because many victims are unable or afraid to disclose or report the violence. Working together, we can build the social supports that can prevent this abuse and keep everyone safe as we age. Unfortunately, it occurs in every demographic and can happen to anyone.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) – commemorated on June15th every year – was launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. It provides an opportunity for people or organizations to take action to protect older people by raising awareness about elder abuse, why it occurs, and what we can do to stop it. We can act collectively to support justice for all.

Cuyahoga County Adult Protective Services continues to staunchly advocate and provide services to our vulnerable seniors on a daily basis. We are determined to recognize the seriousness of elder abuse not only on June 15, but every day of the year as we work towards alleviating the detrimental impact abuse, neglect, and exploitation has on our citizens. On an annual basis APS hosts for our community partners a forum to draw further attention to the epidemic of elder abuse.

This years program will include 3.25 CEUs. Our objectives are:

¨ Review changes and additions made to the State of Ohio’s APS mandate

¨ Discuss the use of tools to assess risk and self-neglect

¨ Conduct a discussion on strategies that you may use to help older adult victims of elder abuse.
