Curriculum Development Camp - led by Mark Schober (Chair-elect, STEMteachersNYC; Trinity School) and Patricia Bauer (Secretary, STEMteachersNYC; Marymount School)

TO ALL OF OUR WORKSHOP ALUMNI (MODELERS AND OTHER ACTIVE-ENGAGEMENT TEACHERS): Come build your Modeling/Active Engagement teaching skills in a workshop designed to take advantage of your knowledge and experience. The principal goal of the workshop is to support you in editing or developing Modeling/active engagement-based curricula tailored to your teaching environment and needs. With the support of peers and Modeling experts, you will work in small teams on projects of your choice for the week of the workshop.

Under the guidance of Mark Schober (master-teacher, modeling guru, and experienced developer of curriculum with strong “storylines”) and Patricia Bauer (experienced curriculum developer and teacher of chemistry), you will identify gaps in your curriculum or parts of your curriculum that do not have the coherency or the effectiveness that you would like. Working in a team you will identify directions for improving the curriculum materials and write materials and/or develop activities to meet the needs you have identified. You will receive and give feedback to colleagues. You will conclude by leading a short workshop for your colleagues to test your materials and stimulate additional feedback.

Participants will be grouped based on the content and focus of their proposed project(s).

Required Workshop Sessions: This workshop will run for 1 full week (Mon., July 13, 2015 to Fri., July 17, 2015) in Manhattan, at Marymount Upper Middle School, 116 East 97th St, New York, NY 10029). The workshop sessions will be Mon. through Thurs., 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and Fri. 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, followed by a social hour from 3:30 to 4:30. This workshop will run simultaneuously with two workshops organized by STEMteachersNYC at Teachers College: Modeling for Middle School Science and Graphical Problem Solving in Physics, with potential interaction among participants online and during the social hour.

COST: $149. Pay either the Non-refundable $49 reservation fee (with balance of $100 due May 15) or the full $149 by clicking the appropriate button above.


Audience: Teachers of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) at any level (K-College) with previous experience in Modeling Instruction and/or in other active engagement approaches to teaching.

Rationale: Successfully implementing Modeling Instruction or any active engagement teaching approach depends critically upon matching the pedagogical philosophy, the style and skills of the teacher, and the curriculum materials to the teaching environment. While it is possible to do good work with students by faithfully learning to follow existing curricula, maximizing instructional impact on students requires thoughtful adaptation. The Curriculum Development Camp offers teachers who have used active engagement curricula an opportunity to modify and develop materials and tools of their own, customized to their students and the situation in their classrooms. The focus of the Camp will be on collaborative work in groups based on shared interests to help teachers sharpen their curriculum development skills, and, ultimately, to improve their instruction.

Prerequisite: When you register for the workshop, you will be asked to submit a description of one or more project(s) in which you are interested and on which you would be willing to work during the workshop. Participants in the workshop will be selected based on their experience with Modeling or active engagement approaches and on the quality and feasibility of their proposed project(s).


  1. To sharpen teacher abilities to produce highly effective curriculum materials and teaching tools that have been tailored and refined to meet the needs of the participant’s individual teaching situation by taking into consideration factors such as class length, students per class, student age, student background, course sequence, curriculum requirements, testing expectations, and so on.
  2. To review the essentials of active engagement teaching, including Modeling Instruction. For example, What constitutes a curriculum storyline? What are the key elements of a learning cycle?  What does science education research have to say about using active engagement methods effectively?
  3. To debrief teachers’ experiences with active engagement in the classroom with the goal of improving the effectiveness of implementation.

Activities. Teachers will begin with an activity in which they contrast the content sequences from a traditional textbook approach with an active engagement or modeling approach.

Teachers will identify parts of their curriculum that do not have the coherency or the effectiveness that they would like, or, quite simply, gaps in their curriculum. Working in teams, they will identify possible directions for improving the curriculum materials. Teachers will write materials and/or develop activities to meet the needs they have identified. The work will be done in teams to benefit from peer feedback and scrutiny. The leaders of the workshop will advise participants individually about their choice of project and will answer questions and provide guidance throughtout the development and writing process.

The workshop will conclude by each team of teachers leading a short workshop for the rest of the participants to test the materials and to solicit group feedback.

Co-Leader: Mark Schober. Mr. Schober has taught physics, chemistry, astronomy, meteorology, and environmental science in grades 7-12.  He is known throughout the country for his expertise in Modeling Instruction as a result of the many Modeling Workshops that he has led. Mr. Schober served as webmaster, workshop leader, and amusement park physics coordinator for the St. Louis Area Physics Teachers; President of the American Modeling Teachers Association (AMTA); and, currently, as Chairman-elect of STEMteachersNYC. Mr. Schober has written copious Modeling Instruction materials in physics and has served AMTA as a curriculum editor for the Physics Mechanics and Models of Light materials. Additionally, Mr. Schober is knowledgeable about a wide variety of Physics Education Research inspired curricula and is a staunch advocate for courses with strong “storylines”.  Mr. Schober continues to explore the interfaces between the sciences, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) -- creating a variety of instructional materials designed to bridge the gaps and helping students to see the unifying concepts.

Are these workshops free?

No. An up-front payment of $149 is required for this 1-week Curriculum Development Camp. First, when you register, you must pay either a $49 non-refundable registration fee or the full fee of $149.  The $49 fee is part of the total $149 workshop fee.  If you pay only the $49 reservation fee, you will receive an email with details about payment of the remaining $100, which will be due May 15. We encourage teachers to apply for financial support to their schools and districts, as well as to local community organizations and foundations.

What is the workshop schedule?

Monday to Thursday: 9:00AM to 4:30PM with one hour lunch
Fridays: 9:00AM to 3:00PM with one hour lunch, with optional informal social hour nearby from 3:30-4:30.

I am interested in taking more than one workshop. Can I register for multiple workshops?

The Curriculum Development Camp will run at the same time, as the Graphical Problem Solving in Physics Workshop so you cannot register for both. The Curriculum Development Camp also overlaps with the Middle School Science Workshop  so you cannot register for the Middle School Science Workshop if you register for the Curriculum Development Camp. 

However, the Physics/Mechanics Modeling Workshop and the Chemistry Modeling Workshop will run from July 20 to Aug 7, so you can register for either of those workshops in addition to the Curriculum Development Camp (at or If you need help deciding which workshop fits your needs best, please email the STEMteachersNYC Registrar (

Is the reservation fee refundable?

No, the reservation fee is not refundable. Please be sure you are able to attend the workshop prior to registering for it. If you mistakenly register for 2 workshops that take place at the same time, we will not be able to refund the reservation fees.

Is the full workshop fee or the balance of the workshop fee (full fee minus the reservation fee) refundable? 

As stated above, the reservation fee is not refundable under any circumstances: neither if it is paid separately nor if it is paid as part of the full workshop fee. Refunds for the balance of the full workshop fee (that is, the full fee minus the reservation fee) must be requested within one (1) week of payment and at least four (4) weeks before the start of the workshop and must be accompanied by an acceptable, documented explanation. Judgments about acceptability of explanations, documentation, and whether or not a refund will be issued are at the sole discretion of STEMteachersNYC and are final. Refunds will not include fees charged on the initial payment by Eventbrite, Paypal, credit cards, and/or banks.

Is my reservation/ticket transferrable?
