Description

The FBI San Francisco Private Sector Engagement Squad is responsible for external liaison and engagement with private sector and community partners in the San Francisco Bay Area. Special Agent Nikki Betz is currently assigned to the San Francisco Division, focusing on Private Sector Engagement. Prior to this current assignment, SA Betz spent multiple years working National Security investigations in the Palo Alto office, specifically theft of intellectual property and economic espionage. Since the inception of the trade secret criminal law in 1996, the FBI Palo Alto office has obtained seventy percent of all indictments and convictions in economic espionage matters.

This presentation will provide situational awareness of economic espionage and intellectual property theft across all industry sectors. SA Betz will be discussing the scope of the problem, recent threats, along with methods and techniques by which domestic and foreign actors have been targeting and stealing intellectual property from U.S. companies. The discussion will also cover some best practices and approaches utilized by Silicon Valley companies to combat persistent efforts to steal intellectual property.
