Event description
Curls in the City: Curls for a Cause raising awareness for Domestic Violence.

About this Event

Curls in the City: Curls for a Cause is a fundraising event that bridges our love of curls with our passion for justice. We believe that using our platform to raise awareness for causes and topics that matter to us is imperative to our vision of creating a more just and equitable world through a common thread - hair. The natural hair community is big and passionate and we believe we can make change through our love of curls.

This fall Nelly and Jess Productions brings you Curls in the City: Love Shouldn't Hurt!

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month providing an opportunity to raise awareness and educate our curl community on the pattern of abusive behaviors that many women and men endure while also celebrating the strength and resilience of domestic violence survivors.

A portion of tickets, raffles, and T-shirt sales will go to support Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation's (NMIC) Domestic Violence Project (DVP). We chose NMIC because we believe in their values and purpose to protect, strengthen, and empower NYC’s most vulnerable populations. As a non-profit organization, they aim to be a catalyst for positive change in the lives of the 14,000 individuals they serve annually. They do this through a range of services including providing support to domestic violence survivors. The Domestic Violence Project (DVP) offers FREE, bilingual services to victims and survivors of intimate partner violence. Services have no time limit and are confidential.

Please support NMIC's (DVP) crucial work with a donation to ensure that domestic violence survivors get the support & services they need : http://bit.ly/curlsforacause. Every dollar helps!

EVENT DETAILS:

Join us as we raise awareness to a normalized, traumatic, and triggering topic. What you learn here could literally save someone's life.

Join the conversation with our amazing panelists as they share their experience as a DV survivor or working with DV survivors:

Jannelle is on a journey of self love and healing from trauma. Growing up in an extremely violent home has given her a 1st and 3rd person perspective in a regard, to the effects and of Domestic Violence. The effect domestic violence has on children is one that often goes unrepresented and undiscussed which is why Jannelle feels it is important to share her story, a story that resembles the experience of so many. She does so in hopes that we may find solidarity and inspiration so we can break the cycle, together.

Kayla was raised in a single family household. Her mother and grandmother were pivotal in instilling strength and resilience in her character building. Kayla’s experience with Domestic Violence was the “mess” that she turned into her message. In 2014 Kayla began to tell her Domestic Violence story. Along with her work with CATW, Kayla is a member of Community Outreach Team at her church, The Gathering Harlem. She believes in advocating and being a voice for the Voiceless in her city.

Lauraliz Morales-Silva is a bilingual community advocate who assists survivors of intimate partner violence at Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC) under the Domestic Violence Project. In her role as Community Engagement Specialist, Lauraliz helps to raise awareness and increase access to domestic violence services through prevention, education, outreach, and activism. Lauraliz also leads the department's economic empowerment services, where she works with clients to assess and address educational and professional barriers to gaining self-sufficiency, confidence, economic security and financial independence. Prior to joining NMIC, Lauraliz worked at the Bronx Family Justice Center (BXFJC) as a legal project assistant within Sanctuary for Families’ Family Law Project.

Flash (moderator) is the founder and CEO of Flash Management LLC and @EVISGALI Athleisure. You may have seen her powerful posts advocating for women empowerment and sharing her most vulnerable life experiences as a survivor. #VolunteerInAFlash showcases her yearly ‘Feeding The Homeless’ event along with her time spent as a volunteer EMT. Flash is a fitness motivator and has combined her knowledge of caring for curly hair with caring for our bodies through #CurlsSweatToo and #CurlClassInAFlash. Her plans for the future are to own a building dedicated to assisting those in need and putting her Biology and Chemistry degrees toward becoming an ER doctor.

Celebrate with DV survivors with some spoken word, good food, drink, music and fun activities including raffles, giveaways and of course walk away with a bomb swag bag!
