Event description
Featuring renowned curators and conservators, this panel will explore the meaning and value of ordinary and everyday fashion in the museum.

About this Event

This panel discussion kicks off the symposium AMERICAN EVERYDAY: Resistance, Revolution & Transformation organized by Columbia College Chicago in partnership with Parsons School of Design (February 15, 2020). Visit this link for more information about the symposium and to register.

Amid the dramatic rise of the blockbuster fashion exhibition over the last decade, rare, high-end and historic fashion has become both more popular and more accessible than ever. Although it is frequently collected, ordinary and everyday dress is rarely spotlighted within these exhibitions. Why is this?

Featuring renowed curators and conservators, this panel discussion will try to answer this question and more by exploring the pleasures and perils of collecting, curating and conserving mundane, ordinary and everyday dress. In doing so, this panel seeks to establish a new critical footing for the study of the relationship between fashion and the everyday within the museum.

Panelists include:

  • Michelle Millar Fisher, Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts, Museum of Fine Arts Boston
  • Virginia Heaven, Curator of Costume, Chicago History Museum
  • Alexandra Palmer, Nora E. Vaughan Fashion Costume Senior Curator, Royal Ontario Museum
  • Sarah Scaturro, Head Conservator, The Costume Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Moderated by:

  • Hazel Clark, Professor of Fashion Studies and Design Studies, Parsons School of Design
  • Lauren Downing Peters, Assistant Professor of Fashion Studies and Director of the Fashion Study Collection, Columbia College Chicago

This event is free and open to the public. Registration required.
