About this Event

Bringing Community Back to Birth:

Community Skill-Share to Remember Birth is Ceremony

In this training and platica, we will share knowledge about the ceremony of birth and the importance of bringing community back to birth in these times. The teachings that come during birth ceremony represent a potential for personal transformation and an opportunity for regenerating community care as a way to heal the current disconnection to birth and other sacred life cycles.

Starting with a basic introduction to the process of physiological birth, we will share a series of practical skills including comfort techniques used during labor and birth and traditional post-partum care. Through skill-share, participants will learn about and share their knowledge about supporting their loved ones who are pregnant or have recently birthed, including how to draw on the lessons of birth ceremony to support people who have experienced miscarriage, abortion, and other big life transitions.

This skill-share is for anyone interested in gaining more tools to support their loved ones during the life cycle of birth including miscarraige and abortion.

Angela Raquel Aguilar, MA, MPH

Angela is mother and full-spectrum birthworker/birthkeeper whose work centers sexual health justice, ecological justice, self-healing, and community care. Angela incorporates the teachings of curanderismo and her ancestral indigenous knowledge in all her offerings; from plant medicine, palabra and laughter, to sobadas and gentle herbal teas.

In 2013 Angela co-founded Nueva Luz (re) Birth and Family Care alongside her birthworker sister, Alejandra Olguin. Together, they consult about and facilitate womxn's healing circles and community workshops in the Bay Area on the interconnection of self-healing, community healing, birthwork, and curanderismo.

Alejandra Olguin, MA, MSW

Alejandra is a full-spectrum traditional birthworker/birthkeeper and mental health practitioner integrating Mexican traditional medicine in her work of holding the ceremony of the sacred stages of life. She is the co-founder of Nueva Luz (re) Birth and Family Care whose work is rooted in the connection between birth and healing. Nueva Luz offers birthwork that is focused on continuing the teachings of our grandmothers, elders, and teachers to reconnect community back to the ceremony of birth.

Alejandra has been shaped by her own healing process of re-membering her ancestral medicine from la Mixteca region in Oaxaca, Mexico and being trained by various traditional healers on her path. Her work as a traditional birthworker and community mental health practitioner intersects in the belief of the sacredness of transitions and the healing that occurs when we acknowledge and honor them as ceremony.
