Curatorial statement: Cumulative Views
The three artists in this exhibition start with an accumulative approach, collecting and gathering objects and imagery and transforming these disparate parts into new visions. The resulting artworks are explorative and capture the layered experiences that each artist has with the Bay Area as an inspiring place to source imagery and materials.
Jerry Ross Barrish collects found objects for his assembled sculptures on the beaches, bayshore, roadways, and recycling centers near San Francisco. His expressive figurative pieces bring a new narrative and vitality to the discarded found materials that he reimagines.
Ellen Little’s large scale watercolors draw from daily walks collecting and observing the diverse local flora and fauna. Her work explores the cycles of life where birth, aging, and death are intertwined and nothing remains constant. Her fluid watercolor application captures this delicate impermanence.
Tiffany Schmierer’s sculptural work highlights the interconnections we have with each other and with our complex environment. She uses clay to capture the forms and imagery of accumulated memories and observations of the city that she often gathers through photographing and sketching on city hikes.
