Culture, Soft Control, & Systems Thinking - How to master your new game Presenter: R. Wade Schuette, MBA

About this Event

TOPIC: Culture, Soft Control, & Systems Thinking - How to master your new game

Managers and CEOs still need to rule the nest, but the days of direct hierarchical command and control are fading -- and in their place are the next generation of power tools: culture, soft-control, and systems thinking.

We'll prime the discussion by taking a quick look at the theory behind revitalizing your people & company using these indirect tools, learn about MIT's "beer game", check out a few actual corporate case-studies, and then just have some hands-on fun together playing a simple game lets us try our hand at "herding cats from afar".

Mr. Schuette's background before "retirement" includes learning computer programming in 1964 at IBM, an undergraduate degree in Physics, an early career MBA, most of a mid career Master of Computer Science in Artificial Intelligence, and a late career Master of Pubic Health degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2008. After 25 years at Cornell University in upstate New York, he spent 15 years at the front lines in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan's 850-bed teaching hospital managing software, databases, and a professional software team supporting and developing mission-critical real-time core software systems.

He is a private pilot and will highlight the common themes between safe cockpit crews in aircraft, high-performance teams in patient safety, "lean" quality techniques from The Toyota Way, and path-finding in general in turbulent times with a shortage of good data -- all of which require engaged passionate professionals empowered by a shared performance ethic and brought to a laser focus by an invisible but absolutely critical supporting culture and ethos sustained by top management.
