Description

Gallery

Directed by S. J. Ewing; Performed by S. J. Ewing & Dancers; Choreographed by S. J. Ewing in collaboration with the artists. This performance by S. J. Ewing & Dancers is a co-presentation between CulturalDC and CityDance, with special guests from CityDance Conservatory.

Gallery, originally created in 2019 for a site-specific presentation at FlashDC, will be redeveloped for CulturalDC's Source Theatre. The content of Gallery is woven together through different stories and experiences of womanhood, as well as the complexities of tensions between our internal desires and societies' expectations of us. Performed by a cast of six female dancers, it is dedicated to the empowerment, fear, strength, resilience and vulnerability of women. The work is athletic and virtuosic with a score of house music driving it forward.

Gallery is about women making, exploring, and creating - and the audience watching and observing that process. The intensity of the highly physical movement vocabulary is heightened through the audience’s unrelenting observation of the dancers as they fight to complete the work.

Gallery does not attempt to create a fourth wall dividing the dancers and audience. Instead, it seeks to open up and directly explores the power play between the observer and the storyteller. By juxtaposing the performer's empowerment in telling their own stories with the intense vulnerability of being under constant scrutiny from the audience, the work questions the lens society uses to hear female stories.

The audience experience of watching and observing such an intense work during which bodies are pushed to physical limits creates a live action gallery of living art: human art.

Please select the ticket type corresponding with the date you would like to attend. Please note that only 10 tickets are available to the public for Saturday October 5.

Presented as part of CulturalDC's 20th Anniversary.

About CityDance

Since its founding in 1996 with a mission to transform lives and communities through dance, CityDance has pursued its vision of a thriving DC arts community where every child has access to an arts education and where world-class dance is available to all. CityDance pursues its mission through three distinct programs:

CityDance Presents, founded in 2011, partners with area presenters to bring world-class dance to DC-area venues, and through its Ignite program, supports local choreographers to create and produce new work.

The CityDance School and Conservatory, founded in 2005, is the resident dance partner of the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD. Today, the school offers over 200 weekly classes to 1,250 students ages 3-adult at its three locations in MD and DC. The Conservatory program, established in 2007 by Lorraine Spiegler, pursues its goal of preparing young dancers for professional careers by offering world-class training in ballet, contemporary and world dance forms taught by world-renowned faculty and guest artists. Graduates have gained acceptance to the country's most prestigious summer intensives, collegiate dance programs, and professional companies. Students have garnered international acclaim at ballet competitions around the world including Prix de Lausanne Finalist, European Ballet Grand Prix Gold for Contemporary, YoungArts Foundation Finalist, Outstanding Teacher Award at the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) Regionals, and Hope Awards at YAGP New York Finals and Regionals, and the winner of Pre-Competitive Boys Division. Two Conservatory students were accepted into Julliard's highly competitive freshman class for Fall 2019.

CityDance DREAM, founded in 2005, brings dance into DC neighborhoods where the arts are least accessible and affordable by providing tuition-free dance training, integrated with wrap-around services, to youth living in underserved DC communities. In fall 2017, DREAM opened its first pre-professional training center in downtown DC after 14 years of working exclusively in school cafeterias, hallways, recreation centers, and other non-traditional dance spaces.

CityDance has won the DC Mayor's Arts Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist, Innovation in the Arts, Excellence in an Artistic Discipline, and Outstanding Achievement in Arts Education. In 2015, CityDance's DREAM program was a recipient of the prestigious President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities 2015 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.
