Referring to his first trip to New York in 1921, Noël Coward wrote: “I remembered the beauty of New York at night, viewed not from a smart penthouse on Park Avenue, but from a crowded seat in Washington Square. And it seemed, in spite of its hardness, and irritating, noisy efficiency, a great and exciting place.”

HB Studio, one of New York City’s original acting studios, celebrates the rich history of theater in Greenwich Village through an exploration of the life and work of four women who exemplify the imagination, activism, and spirit of the Village and who helped make the Village a “great and exciting place.” The program will feature readings of scenes from plays, including Susan Glaspell’s Trifles, a play as resonant today as it was in 1916, as well as commentary and reminiscences of Maria Irene Fornes by Migdalia Cruz.

In 1916, Djuna Barnes wrote of the people of Greenwich Village: “We have all that the rest of the world has in common commodities, and we have that better part: men and women with a new light flickering in their eyes, or on their foreheads the radiance of some unseen splendor.”
