Description

Cultural Humility: Challenging our Assumptions

By: Barbara Stroud, PhD

This training will take a complex look at culture as multifaceted and encompassing not only race but orientation, nation of origin, faith, ability/disability, gender, and more. Issues of inequity, discrimination, and poverty negatively impact the emotional health of individuals. Thus it is paramount that providers build a deeper understanding how they can sensitively consider culture as a family strength not a barrier to service delivery. Providers will be asked to examine their personal culture and consider ways to step outside of their professional lens, or dominant culture view to embrace the unique diversity issues of each family.

Following this training...

  1. Participants will be able to articulate how culture influences relationships, social behavior, and mental wellness.
  2. Participants will be able to communicate content from current research on the neurological impact of racism and discrimination as related to increased risk for mental health disorders.
  3. Participants will be able to explain the concept of ‘Cultural Humility’
  4. Participants will be able to summarize the continuum that defines dominant culture not as a person or a race, but a system of power over
  5. Participants will be challenged to consider how the dominant culture lens shapes our clinical understanding, developmental norms, and values regarding parental behavior
  6. Participants will be asked to examine implicit biases as they impact their daily lives and direct work with clients and families
