Faculty: Brad Dunkin, MHA, Senior Risk Management Specialist, NORCAL

This risk management educational activity will discuss cultural competency in healthcare and emphasize risk management strategies for effectively communicating with a diverse patient population. Additionally, the presentation will emphasize best practices to ensure that you successfully address various risk factors associated with patients who may have limited English proficiency or low health literacy.

Learning Objectives:

This educational activity will support your ability to:

  • Respond to challenges that may emerge when working with culturally, linguistically and literacy diverse populations.

  • Apply strategies to reduce communication barriers with limited English proficiency patients in your practice.

  • Assess each patient interaction for health literacy barriers to effective communication.

  • Apply various techniques for educating patients and confirming their understanding of health information provided by you, including your recommendations for treatment.
