This course satisfies the MD requirement for Psychologists for cultural competence.

Target audience: clinicians and mental health professionals.

Cultural competence is not a singular skill that clinicians possess, but an ongoing, living, breathing area of competence that must be attended to and nurtured. During this workshop, Dr. Samantha Sweeney will highlight the current research and contemporary thinking involving cultural competence development for clinicians. Attendees will be exposed to the systemic and individual factors that influence mental health treatment access and outcomes. Social justice and ethical considerations for cultural competence and its continual development will be explicated. Workshop participants will consider the different theoretical perspectives on cultural competence and how to apply them to their practice. Furthermore, participants will leave with the understanding that developing their cultural competence is a form of increasing and maintaining their overall competence as clinicians. Lastly, Dr Sweeney will explore methods for maintaining and expanding one’s cultural competence.

Learning Objectives

1.  Attendees will be able to describe the interaction between cultural competence and general competence for clinicians.

2.  Attendees will be able to explain how cultural factors impact the access to and treatment outcomes of mental health care for individuals.

3.  Attendees will be able to explain how awareness, knowledge, skills, and attitude, as related to the therapist’s cultural competence, impact the therapeutic relationship.

4.  Attendees will have several options for how to develop and self-evaluate their own cultural competence on an on-going basis
