FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS ONLY

This symposium will expand awareness of issues relevant to cultural awareness and difference by providing a space for critical dialogue. We will explore various forms of cultural literacy while offering historical perspectives and consider the sociopolitical and cultural ramifications of these acts and behaviors. The conversation will be facilitated through the lens of race, gender, sexuality, class, age, ability, etc. to demonstrate the complexities of cultural identities and respect.

WORKSHOPS WILL FEATURE THESE topics:

  • Straight Talk about the Nword
  • Cultural Appropriation and Exploitation vs. Cultural Appreciation and Exchange
  • Interfaith Literacy

We will further demonstrate the value and necessity of cultivating positive communications, inclusive language, advocacy, self-awareness, and cultural competency.

OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES:

Research, American history, current events, and the realities of the social climate across the country will provide context for this

Critical conversation designed to enlighten, bring about awareness, and motivate students to be agents of change. Students will engage in meaningful conversations, examine personal assumptions and biases, and educate themselves and others through informed social discourse.
