Join us on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the Gaia Hotel and Spa conference center for a special presentation by speaker Tawara Goode.

Tawara is the director of the National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC) at Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development and Georgetown University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and focuses on national level efforts to advance and sustain cultural and linguistic competence in this field.

The mission of the NCCC is to increase the capacity of health care and mental health care programs to design, implement, and evaluate culturally and linguistically competent service delivery systems to address growing diversity, persistent disparities, and to promote health and mental health equity. She had a primary role in developing curricula, assessment instruments, professional development series, and other resources that support cultural and linguistic competence.

At this conference you will learn:

Understanding and responding to culture within the context of developmental disabilities services and support

  • Reflect and share perspective about cultural identity
  • Define culture, cultural diversity, and the convergence of cultural contexts impacting people with disabilities
  • Cite cultural influences on beliefs and practices related to systems and providers of services and supports for individuals who experience developmental disabilities
  • Apply these concepts to case studies/scenarios

Cultural and linguistic competence: Implications for developmental disabilities professionals and service providers

  • Describe a conceptual framework for a cultural competence model
  • Apply elements of cultural and linguistic competence at the individual and organizational levels to respective roles, responsibilities, and Regional Centers.
  • Define linguistic competence (Goode & Jones definition) and apply to services and supports for people with developmental disabilities and their families
