Join us for a two-day mushroom cultivation workshop at the UpS Botanical Sanctuary and take home your own mushroom cultures, logs & skills!

About this Event

Go beyond log-plugging! This mushroom cultivation workshop offers more advanced techniques for growing mushrooms at home and propagating native wild species.

Through hands-on activities, participants will learn to cultivate woodland mushrooms, amplify native mycorrhizal fungi, and collect and culture wild mushrooms in the new UpS mycology and microbiology lab. Everyone will take home mushroom cultures and valuable knowledge of fungi to imagine alliances with this seldom seen kingdom.

This two-day workshop will take place at United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary in Rutland, Ohio which includes 379 acres of forest, native prairie, pond. There are optional fees for primitive camping and weekend meals for participants. Saturday dinner will be catered by Restaurant Salaam from Athens, Ohio. Continental breakfast and lunch both days will include gluten free and vegan options.

Mark Jones is the owner and mycologist at Sharondale Mushroom Farm in Cismont, VA. Sharondale grows the highest quality certified organic mushrooms and organic mushroom spawn. Sharondale Mushroom Farm is a United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary. Sharondale offers workshops, tools and supplies for mushroom and microbial cultivation.

Schedule

Day 1: Saturday, May 2nd

  • Breakfast, coffee & tea
  • Introduction to the fungi
  • Prepare materials for hands-on cultivation
  • Lab design and protocols
  • Hands-on introduction to lab techniques
  • Inoculate plant material and logs
  • Daily evaluation and Q&A
  • Dinner (optional)

Day 2: Sunday, May 3rd

  • Breakfast, coffee & tea
  • Amplifying native mycorrhizae & indigenous microorganisms (IMOs)
  • Hands-on mycorrhizal cultivation
  • Lunch break
  • Identifying and culturing agriculturally important fungi
  • Continue hands-on inoculation and set up outdoor mushroom growing area
  • Using fungi for food, medicine, education, and therapy
  • Workshop evaluation and Q&A
