Join Edible History this holiday season for our latest supper club series, Culinary Splendors of Medieval Baghdad!
We’re taking diners on a journey back to the time of the Abbasid Caliphate, the Islamic Golden Age, during the rule of Caliph Harun al-Rashid, most famously known as the prince from One Thousand and One Arabian Nights. These are the days of Aladdin and his lamp, Ali Baba and the forty thieves, and the seven voyages of Sinbad.
This period was also the height of the Islamic Empire; when the caliph’s rule stretched from the borders of India, through the Middle East to North Africa and Spain. Scholars from around the world came together at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, where algebra, astronomy and medicine were developed. Music, poetry and art flourished. Abbasid society was diverse and open.
On December 10th, we’ll recreate the most sumptuous specialties from the tables of the Caliph’s court. This six course feast with wine pairings will include dishes like Fahkitiyya, lamb meatballs simmered in yogurt and sumac, and Buraniyah, the favorite eggplant delicacy of Buran, the Caliph’s wife. Diners can also expect dishes like Samak Mashwi, a whole roast fish stuffed with walnuts and sesame as well as Judhaab, chicken slow roasted over an apricot-saffron flatbread.
