Inspired by our RESOLVIENDO installation, the Annenberg Space for Photography and the New Cuba’s Jauretsi Saizarbitoria invite you to get a glimpse of the tech-culture revolution in Cuba. Learn directly from people at the forefront of this movement—both in and out of Cuba—about how Cuban youth have worked around government restrictions to get internet access and go online.

Moderated by Cuban-American curator and digital strategist Jauretsi, speakers will include Dadne Carbonell (Cuban computer systems analyst), “Dany Paquete” (a creator of El Paquete Semenal, an underground weekly distribution of pirated international content via hard drives), and Susanna Kohly (Marketing Lead, Google Cuba).


Speaker Bios

Susanna Kohly / Co-Founder Google Cuba & Marketing Lead

Susanna leads Marketing for Google Cuba. Inspired by her Cuban heritage, she co-founded Google's Cuba team, an initiative that brings greater access to connectivity, new technologies, and Google products to Cuba to build digital bridges between Cuba and the world. As a result, Google is currently the only U.S. based Internet company that is in active discussions with the Cuban authorities about expanding Internet access on the island. Susanna has been at Google for 5 years and lives with her husband and two young boys in San Francisco. Susanna attends the Annenberg panel to shares viewpoints of Cuba tech through the lens of a Cuban-American on the frontier of this era.


Dadne Carbonell / computer systems analyst based in Cuba

Dadne Carbonell is a computer systems analyst well-versed in the underground networks of Cuba Tech. Carbonell has collaborated with different cultural and communitarian projects, such as El Fanguito Estudio, conducted by Cuban artist Roberto Peraza, whose work traverses the confines of geographic and personal borders through technology. Using the internet, social media, and animation, Peraza’s studio creates a body of work that explores the moral, spiritual, and social modes of conduct governing society. He has also participated in the organization of several hip hop concerts and additional musical events. He is a regular collaborator in the Foreringen Viviar Associaton´s projects in Cuba.


Danys Cabrera Garcia/ Cuban tech entrepreneur now based in Mexico

At only 29 years old, Danys “el Paquete” Cabrera Garcia has made a name for himself as one of the most famous members of the digital new wave in Cuba. Garcia is the founder of el paquete semenal (which translates to “the weekly package”), a weekly terabyte of online content from outside of the island—including TV shows, news, music, films and phone apps. since around 2008 on the underground market in Cuba as a substitute for broadband internet. In 2015 it was the primary source of entertainment for millions of Cubans. Now based in Mexico, Garcia has been featured in documentaries in media like Vox and now is featured in the new film Give Me Future which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Jauretsi Saizarbitoria/ The New Cuba founder and Cuba consultant

An American currently residing in Cuba, Jauretsi was named a “Cuban Culture Hunter” by Billboard Magazine (May 2016). Her banner, The New Cuba supports the cross-pollination of US artists building a bridge with Cuban society. Production clients in Cuba includes Major Lazer, Conde Nast, Bloomingdales, Buena Vista Social Club, Showtime, and The Roots. In addition to her Cuba work, Jauretsi was a New York hybrid media type for the last 20 years, having served Senior positions at Details, Jane, and Paper Magazine. Her digital content clients included eBay, LVMH’s Nowness, Pharrell Williams, New York Times T site, and The Standard Hotel among others. Jauretsi also covers all that is “the new Cuba” consistently on her website, www.MeetTheNewCuba which encompassed art, tech, music, and all in-between.
