Event Details

This is the first in a series of three teacher-led webinars supported by the Center for Teaching Quality. Here's to working collaboratively to advance the bold ideas and expert practices of teachers!

Webinar 1: Literacy Across the Content Areas

March 19, 7:30 – 9 p.m. ET

The English Language Arts and Literacy standards in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) send a clear message about the importance of literacy across the content areas: “Just as students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, so too must the Standards specify the literacy skills and understandings required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines.”

Webinar 2: Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners

April 9, 7:30 – 9 p.m. ET

According to the mission statement of the Common Core: “The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills our young people need for success in college and careers.” The Common Core provides a framework and an opportunity to provide all students with clarity, consistency and an equal opportunity for an education, regardless of where they live.

Knowing the demands of the CCSS coupled with the diverse needs of the students we serve, classroom teachers remain responsible for determining the how:

  • How does this look in the classroom?
  • How do we best support the individual needs of students?
  • How do we ensure we are preparing all of our learners for a wide variety of postsecondary pathways?
  • How can the CCSS help us?

Webinar 3: Text Complexity and Selection

May 7, 7:30  – 9 p.m. ET

Research shows that a staple of post-graduation success is the ability to navigate and conquer complex text.  Anchor Reading Standard 10 of the Common Core State Standards emphasizes a ladder of increasing text complexity that students will have to master over their K-12 education. But what does this mean?

We will dissect the implications for our classrooms as we engage in dialogue around the following questions:

  • What is text complexity? (Do I just give harder texts?)
  • What does it mean to select complex texts?
  • How will this change life in and out of our classrooms?

Join expert voices from a variety of grade levels and content areas as we explore these questions, construct meaning,  and share strategies for implementing the CCSS in all classrooms.
