Event description

Description

Chicago Transit Authority Skokie Shops

The Skokie Shops are CTA's heavy maintenance facility for the entire fleet of railcars on the "L" rapid transit system. While most cleaning and routine maintenance is performed at the smaller shops and yards located at the end of every line, all major repairs and overhauls are done at the Skokie facility. Since 1926, it's been located along the CTA Yellow Line (formerly Skokie Swift). The current 236,700-square-foot complex is primarily the result of late-1990s renovations that added an administrative building and state-of-the-art new facilities for inspection, painting, rewiring, rebuilding and more.

BEHIND THE SCENES

RSVP Required: Tour the expansive Skokie Shops complex with CTA staff to learn how Chicago's elevated train cars are maintained and modernized. Vintage trains from CTA's Heritage Fleet will shuttle visitors from the Howard CTA Station to the Skokie Shops.

All visitors to this site must register in advance and bring a valid photo ID. Names of all guests must be provided at time of registration. Capacity is very limited and will fill rapidly. There is no waitlist and reservations are final.

This one-hour tour begins and ends at the Howard CTA Station (Red/Yellow/Purple Line) at the corner of Howard Street and Paulina Street. Specific instructions and exact meeting location will be emailed to registered guests. This tour is not wheelchair accessible. For safety reasons, all tour participants will be required to wear long pants and closed toe, non-steel-toe, rubber-soled shoes. All visitors subject to security check.
