About this Event

AM Session: Meadowood Court Mayday – Survival from the Company Officer’s Perspective

Deputy Chief Micah Joel Kiger, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue

On May 25th, 2008, four firefighters from Loudoun County Fire and Rescue became trapped on the second floor while performing interior operations on a house fire in Leesburg, VA after conditions rapidly deteriorated secondary to a flashover occurring on the first floor. All four firefighters were burned and required hospitalization for their injuries. This program will explore the root causes of this event from the perspective of the first-arriving Company Officer whose crew was injured in the incident. Chief Kiger will present incident operations, provide video footage of the incident with respective radio transmissions, describe departmental changes/recommendations, and the lessons learned from the company officer's first-hand perspective. This presentation will also cover how training yourself and crew the right way becomes second nature and how you can rely on training when it truly counts.

PM Session: Marine, Airborne, Ranger, Firefighter: The Case for Effective Small Unit Leadership in the Fire Service

Captain Mark Davidson, Fairfax County Fire Department

The fire service has failed in its responsibility to train its company officers.  To that end this class is a discussion about one critical aspect of a company officer’s development, leadership.  More specifically the fundamental characteristics of the specific type of leadership skills needed for any company officer in the fire service, small-unit leadership.  We’ll draw comparisons to small-unit leadership in the military.  We aren’t going to talk about General Mattis, Schwarzkopf, or Patton.  We are going to talk about what a young Corporal or Sergeant does to effectively lead a fire-team, a group of four, a number similar to what comes off the rig at oh-dark in anywhere America, responding to a 911 call with limited information, compressed timelines, and insufficient resources.  Those traits and skills needed to transition between direct supervision and task-level action are the absolute bedrock for success on the street.  And make no mistake, success on the street does not happen without success in the firehouse, and that’s where leadership begins.
