The Medical Chattel Principle: Race, Slavery, and Dissection in Early American Medical Schools

Join us for an Emerging Scholar Lunch Talk with Professor Christopher Willoughby, entitled, "The Medical Chattel Principle: Race, Slavery, and Dissection in Early American Medical Schools."


Christopher Willoughby received his PhD in history from Tulane University, and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Emory University's Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry. His research interests reside at the intersection of the histories of medicine, slavery, and race in early America and the Atlantic World. He is currently completing a monograph on the history of racial science and slavery in early American medical schools. Willoughby’s research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and the Countway Library at Harvard University.
