Event description

Description

It is my privilege to represent the Merriwether District of Edgefield on County Council. Having spent several years speaking with my neighbors about the growth the greater CSRA is experiencing, and how that will inevitably reach us, I am keenly aware of my neighbors concerns. Having spent time studying the economic impacts most rural counties in our republic are facing, I am profoundly aware of the fiscal challenges the vast majority of rural counties like ours face.

Personally, I am grateful for the activity taking place in the seven county region on both sides of the Savannah River considered the Fort Gordon District, which includes Edgefield County. Our challenge as a community - as well as the municipalities in our county - is to ensure we harness this growth in a way which benefits those who have lived here for a long time, as well as those who inevitably will relocate or choose to open businesses here. We can not stop the growth; however as I have said since before running for County Council, “A rising tide, lifts all boats!” This inevitable growth will raise the boat for all of Edgefield County.

One piece of the puzzle, in my opinion is an educated citizenry. In that vain, I have invited Tom Clark, Executive Director of The Alliance for Fort Gordon, to give a presentation on the economic impact Fort Gordon is having on our region. Let me share two quotes from his presentation:

  • “The Fort Gordon Cyber District represents a two-state, seven-county regional economic development and attraction initiative that supports defense and private sector technology innovation and growth.”

  • The CSRA Alliance is fostering collaboration across government, industry and academia to support the development of a robust Cyber District that serves as an economic development engine for the region to benefit all communities.

Speaking with some of my neighbors, I know some are completely unaware of the massive influx of Cyber Security Specialists to our region, the economic impact, the high paying employment opportunities for those properly educated, or the role much of this growth plays in our national defense.

Other neighbors who are aware continually ask me, how is County Leadership preparing for this growth. I can assure you we are working on a Strategic Plan, and in the near future there will be county meetings where you can provide your input. In the meantime I strongly encourage you to join me on Monday December 4th, 2017 at 6:30 to specifically learn about the activity at Fort Gordon, and how it will impact us.

Please R.S.V.P., as seating is limited. Also - please share with your neighbors. If you know developers, real estate agents or business owners, I would encourage you to share this with those folks as well - but please do tell them it is important they R.S.V.P.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at Scott@HScottCooper.com or call me at 803-293-5087.
