About the Event

Stock exchanges have long performed an important role concerning the raising of capital for business through the buying and selling of shares by investors. In effect, stock exchanges facilitate investment-related decisions.

The Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative is a peer-to-peer learning platform for exploring how exchanges, in collaboration with investors, regulators, and companies, can enhance corporate transparency – and ultimately performance – on ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE is organized by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Global Compact, the UN Environment Program Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI).

At the end of 2008, the Chief Executive of Aviva Investors called on all the listing authorities of global stock exchanges to consider whether their listing rules should include a provision promoting disclosure by companies on their sustainability performance and strategy. This call to action and the groundwork laid out by the UN Global Compact, UNCTAD and PRI helped inspire the establishment of the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative. In 2009 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon opened the first SSE Global Dialogue in New York City. Participants were comprised of stock exchanges, institutional investors and representatives of the WFE and IOSCO. Today the SSE counts most of the world’s exchanges as members.

In this talk, Dr. Anthony Miller will describe the origins and evolution of the SSE Initiative, as well as discuss the activities it undertakes in conjunction with stock exchanges and related parties to promote corporate ESG transparency and in addition he discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in terms of the role of stock exchanges as promoters of good corporate ESG behaviour and performance.
